Международная общественная организация бывших военнослужащих "Марс-Меркурий" и командование морской авиации ВМФ учредили серебряную медаль и премию имени дважды Героя Советского Союза Б. Ф. Сафонова. Такая награда будет вручаться лучшим летчикам морской авиации, проявившим высокое летное мастерство и внесшим весомый вклад в укрепление ее боевой мощи. Медаль и премия должны привлечь внимание государственных органов, общественности страны к решению неотложных проблем развития морской авиации, а также содействовать оказанию моральной и социальной поддержки летчикам и членам их семей. Медали за номером один и премии имени Б. Ф. Сафонова был удостоен посмертно Герой России генерал-майор Тимур Апакидзе. Награда передана семье погибшего летчика-аса палубной авиации.
