In recent years, our country has published many books on various issues of the United Nations. The Institute of Soviet History of the USSR Academy of Sciences publishes collective studies on the history of the Soviet Union's activities at the United Nations. The fourth book of this edition is chronologically brought up to 1970 1 . Nevertheless, the book of the Soviet diplomat and historian L. N. Kutakov is of undoubted interest to both a wide range of readers and specialists.

Its merit lies primarily in the fact that it convincingly shows the importance for the cause of peace and the United Nations itself of the consistently implemented Leninist peace-loving foreign policy of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Soviet Government. The author exposes the aggressive foreign policy course of circles that oppose the peaceful settlement of the most important issues of our time and try to use the UN for their own purposes, to prevent it from making constructive decisions. L. N. Kutakov covers the most important events in international life of the late 60s-early 70s, recreates a fairly complete picture of the situation that developed during this period in the UN and the activities of one of its most important organs , the Security Council. The book is read with great interest. It is distinguished by a well-thought-out composition, written in a good literary language. It contains many interesting facts about the activities of various UN bodies, primarily the Security Council, which are known only to direct participants in the events.

The value of the book also lies in the fact that, by providing documentary and factual materials, the author was able to convey the direct atmosphere of the activities of Soviet diplomats, the UN Secretary-General and delegations of other countries. Working in the United Nations since 1965, first at the USSR Mission to the UN, and then from 1968 to 1973 as UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Security Council Affairs, L. N. Kutakov had the opportunity to get to know many prominent figures of other countries closely. Interesting are his statements about the UN Secretaries-General T. Lee, D. Hammarskjold, W. Tan and K. Waldheim. The book also draws attention to the portraits of diplomats of socialist and capitalist countries and their representatives in the UN: Bulgaria-M. Tarabaniv, the United States-A. Goldberg, Great Britain-Lord Caradon, Canada-J. R. R. Tolkien. Ignatieva et al.

The author begins his account of events in June 1967. It reflects the atmosphere that prevailed in the Security Council on June 5, 1967, when the 1347th meeting on the situation in the Middle East as a result of Israeli aggression began. At a time when some in Egypt are trying to distort the history of Soviet - Egyptian relations, an accurate account of the events of the summer of 1967 once again illustrates the principled and consistent position of the Soviet Government, which strives to establish a just and lasting peace in the Middle East and always stands on the side of the victims of aggression. A huge role was played by the statement of the Soviet Government of June 5, which stated the need for the UN to fulfill its main duty - to seek an end to Israel's aggression and take urgent measures for a peaceful settlement in the Middle East. L. N. Kutakov shows how the American delegation, after Israel achieved certain military successes, declared its refusal to include the issue of withdrawal of troops in any Security Council resolution, thereby contributing to aggression. Page by page, the book describes how, thanks to the efforts of the Soviet Union and all peace-loving forces, it was possible to achieve a ceasefire in the Middle East. The decisive warning of the Soviet Government had its effect. The Israeli Government was forced to agree to the cessation of military operations. However, as you know, Israel continued to violate the Security Council resolution after that.

A number of subsequent pages of the book are devoted to describing the long-running struggle that has unfolded in the UN over the settlement of the Middle East. The author convincingly shows how the Soviet representatives

L. N. Kutakov also cites interesting facts that shed additional light on the US policy in Vietnam and the flexible diplomacy of the DRV aimed at eliminating American aggression.

It is well known, the author writes, that since 1950 The Soviet Union consistently advocated the restoration of the legitimate rights of the People's Republic of China in the UN, and this was not achieved only as a result of the stubborn resistance of the United States of America. The author depicts the struggle that unfolded in the UN around the Indo-Pakistani conflict of 1971. A new state appeared on the map - the People's Republic of Bangladesh, which in 1974, at the XXIX session of the General Assembly, was admitted to the UN.

Serious attention is paid in the book to showing the active activities of socialist, democratic and progressive peace-loving forces in support of national liberation movements in Africa and Latin America. The author uses a wealth of factual material to analyze the policy of the USSR and other socialist countries on these issues in the UN bodies. This policy greatly contributed to the success of the liberation struggle of the peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The presentation is based not only on documentary sources, but also on personal impressions of L. N. Kutakov.

The section "People, events, meetings" reveals the specifics of the organization of work in the UN, contains accurate assessments of prominent government figures with whom the author met.

The book presents Soviet diplomacy in action, its role in putting into practice Lenin's peace-loving foreign policy of the Land of the Soviets.
