Such a dessert turns out to be aromatic and unusual.

This gives baked goods a light caramel color and a beautiful appearance. Especially well, rooibos combines with chocolate and dried fruits. For example, in bread with figs and walnuts, rooibos adds depth of flavor.

Some pastry chefs even use rooibos to make icing. To do this, a strong rooibos is brewed, mixed with powdered sugar and lemon juice — and you get a delicate and aromatic icing for cakes and cupcakes.

It sounds unexpected, but rooibos goes great with meat. It is used for marinades, especially for pork and chicken. Rooibos gives meat a sweet, smoky taste. In South Africa, rooibos is sometimes added to sauces for game and smoked meat.

Rooibos is also used as the base for sauces: it is mixed with tomato paste, garlic and spices, and you get a rich barbecue sauce.

Rooibos is not only delicious — it is also beneficial. It has been drunk for centuries, and modern science confirms many of its properties.

Rooibos contains a unique antioxidant — aspalathin, which is not found in other plants. It helps neutralize free radicals and slow down the aging process. This makes rooibos beneficial for the skin and immune system.

In addition to aspalathin, rooibos contains many polyphenols that protect cells from oxidative stress. Therefore, rooibos is often recommended as a preventive measure against cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer.

Rooibos helps with gastrointestinal disorders, relieves spasms and calms inflammation. It is recommended to drink it for gastritis and high acidity — it does not irritate the mucous membrane, unlike black tea. Also, rooibos helps with nausea and bloating.

Rooibos contains a lot of calcium, magnesium and fluoride. Fluorine, in particular, is beneficial for teeth — it strengthens the enamel. Calcium and magnesium support bone and nervous system health. Therefore, rooibos is particularly recommended for children and the elderly.

Rooibos helps normalize blood sugar levels. Studies show that it can improve insulin sensitivity. This makes it beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes and those who monitor their blood sugar levels.

Rooibos is an excellent drink for relaxation. It helps with insomnia, anxiety and stress. It is often recommended for those who want to calm down before bedtime but do not want to drink coffee tea. In South Africa, rooibos has traditionally been given to children to help them calm down and sleep well.

Rooibos is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women because it does not contain caffeine and has no contraindications. It even helps with nausea and fatigue, which is especially important in the first trimester.

Rooibos is very easy to brew. Usually, 1–2 teaspoons are taken per cup and filled with boiling water (95–100°C). Brew for 5–7 minutes. The longer it sits, the richer the taste. Rooibos does not taste bitter even if it is overdone. It can be drunk both hot and cold — with ice, lemon, honey or mint.

In South Africa, rooibos is often drunk with milk and sugar, like traditional tea. In Europe, it is usually drunk black, with a spoonful of honey or an orange slice. And in summer, refreshing lemonades and cocktails are made from it.

Rooibos is not just a drink. It is a part of South African culture that has conquered the world thanks to its taste, benefits and versatility. It can be drunk hot and cold, added to baked goods and even to meat dishes. It is beneficial for the skin, heart, nerves and digestion. And it does not contain caffeine, so it can be drunk without restrictions.
